Small Camera, Big Impact: How Action Cameras have Changed Video for Sports

Dropping into a double-black-diamond powder descent, ripping through the trees of an epic single-track, or gripping a wide-open throttle in the hot desert, all invoke feelings of exhilaration that are unrivaled.

Once upon a time (really not very long ago), these feelings were personal, shared only with those lucky enough to be there with you. Capturing the moment with video was only for the elite few, or the rest of us who lugged our parent’s old camera around with us all day. Yep, those were the good old days. Enter the Action Camera. Now those memories can be recorded, edited and shared with the entire world in a matter of minutes.

As you can see from the above images, Action Cameras are small HD cameras that are made to easily attach to a helmet (or any piece of gear or equipment) and capture high quality action shots from many unique perspectives.

This simplification of video has truly enhanced our personal exposure to the world around us. By allowing a pro-athlete to strap a camera to their head and film every move from their unique perspective, each of us gets to fly like the pros. Upon getting that sense of possibility, more and more people are being drawn to the outdoors themselves.

Simply put, it’s easier to sell a mountain bike when you can show the consumer how awesome it would be to rip through some gnarly backcountry trail on it. Video appeals to their senses, which in turn inspires them to open their pocketbooks.

Since its conception, the Action Camera has flooded the action sports industries. Surfing, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, skydiving, and many other sports rely heavily on this technology. Picking up on this, Reality TV and many other industries have quickly followed suit. It is safe to say, Action Camera’s are here to stay.
